No, I think you misinterpreted it. Read this . He's still an idiot, but he's against involvement in Syria. He only wants to reinstate the draft so that lawmakers won't enter into wars so casually. Interesting thought experiment, but I sure as hell hope he doesn't seriously think a draft is the answer.

If I'm not mistaken, he's said the same thing about the last several wars. Reinstating the draft so that more people have a stake has been his thing for years.

Because we never entered wars serendipitously before. Also, can't they still START with volunteers? Before they move to the draft? I thought we only drafted people when shit got serious. We have a million man /person military, I don't think we're going to need a lot for anything but war with a major power.

An education that I would like to some day share with the youth of the world which would allow them a better chance at life. I'm not up on the prospect of shooting a man who probobly has a wife and kids, who probobly believes that what he's doing is for a better future for them. I seriously doubt many of the men in the syrian army believe that what they're doing is wrong. I know that isn't going to fix issues and for now we have to kill them. However I hope that I can change that. I hope that I can teach people to think for themselves so that when someone tries to do the thinking for them they will fight back. While Rangle wants to fight a war, I want to make sure another one never happens. That's what I have.

So in other words, you have no skin in the game. That is sort of Rangel's point. Thanks to our volunteer "professional" military, sticking our nose into foreign affairs only directly affects .1% of our population. The rest of us don't have to sacrifice a thing. People really didn't start talking about/protesting the Vietnam War until they restarted the draft.
It is very easy to send others to war when you yourself aren't going.

And why exactly should I have skin in the game? Going into Syria would have no positives for us. The people already hate the U.S., it will cost us a ton of money, more people than necessary would die, and someone worse will probably take control. I personally think a war would be stupid. Maybe a couple missiles to destroy the chemical weapon facilities and send in a couple people in to kill the top 20 people in the government then let the rebels do what they want.
(Also dude, remember that this is just a debate. I have nothing against you and want to stay on friendly terms.)

For someone so educated, you sure are ignorant. Rangel has experienced war personally (the Purple Heart and Bronze Star are your indications that he's been in combat and caught some flack for it. Real flack, not the bile you're vomiting) and he doesn't want to go to war in Syria or anywhere else unless we absolutely have to to defend our national security.
Rep. Rangel trolls supposedly educated people like yourself by bringing up the concept of a draft as a means of getting people like you to look a little further than the end of yourself-centered noses.

I called him a jive ass motherfucker, a crusty ass motherfucker, and a stupid politician there was nothing racist about that. I was just pissed at him for even suggesting such a thing. Educated people can get pissed too.
I understand Rangel's plan of "Lets start a draft and then all of congress would be more careful when starting a war" and that has it merits. However it's still stupid because it would force people that don't want to be in the army into the army that don't want to be there. And with the resources used to train the people that don't want to be there we could better train and outfit the troops that we already have in order to take their place. Also it's stupid to emotionally blackmail congress because you know with the amount of corruption in this country their precious little kids would be exempt. As for affecting the rest of the country you would forcing kids away from their parents who would want them back safe and sound. So what if there was a major threat? You'd have a large portion of the population freaking out because their kids were going to die against their will and you would not be able to do jack shit because there would be riots in cities all over the country. Also basic training is pretty much mind washing someone into being able to kill another human being, doing that to every young person would also make crime skyrocket!
I don't care if that man has a medal of honor, it's a stupid Idea.

An educated, sober person would take a step back and think about what they're going to write when they are angry. Or at least look at it before hitting Publish.
An educated person would realized the origins of "jive ass" and using it to describe a black man is vaguely racist. There are an infinite number of pejoratives to choose from to describe Rep. Rangel, and most of them would be accurate (I'm not a fan) but you went there.
An educated person would be able to see beyond the hysterics and realize that Rep. Rangel actually agrees with you.
An educated person would reflect upon what has been written by other people in response to my screed and realize that they have been trolled by a member of Congress.
An educated person doesn't have to repeatedly mention that they are an educated person.
